Frequently Asked Questions
What age can children start?
Children are welcome from age five. At this age, classes focus on rhythm awareness, body coordination, and the joy of movement — all within a warm, encouraging environment. There is no pressure to perform or progress at a particular pace.
Do I need any experience to join?
Not at all. Beginners classes start from the very beginning, and there is no assumption of prior knowledge. Adults and children alike are welcome with no dance background whatsoever.
What do students wear to class?
For regular classes, comfortable clothing that allows free movement is perfectly fine — there is no strict dress code to begin with. For examinations and performances, students typically wear a traditional Kathak costume: a ghagra or churidar with dupatta. Full guidance on costumes is given well in advance of any performance or examination.
Can I come for a trial class before committing?
Yes, and we encourage it. Please get in touch via WhatsApp or the enquiry form and we will arrange a trial session so you can experience the class properly before making any commitment.
I am an adult who has never danced before. Is Kathak still for me?
Absolutely. Several students at Sama School began as adults with no prior dance experience and have since performed on stage and sat PRSSV examinations. Classical dance rewards patience, dedication, and curiosity — qualities that have nothing to do with age.
Are online classes as effective as in-person ones?
Online classes work well for students who are continuing their learning and have already built a foundation. For complete beginners, in-person classes are generally recommended initially, so that postural and technical habits can be established with hands-on guidance. We are happy to discuss what format would suit you best when you get in touch.
